Although Len attended school dances he felt he couldn’t dance like most of his friends. At age 13, and at the suggestion of his friends, he decided to take dance lessons at the Wrightsons Dance Studio in East Fremantle to learn social dancing only. It was during this time he was fortunate to witness an inspirational exhibition by Robert and Shelda Wrightson and it was then that he knew that this was what he wanted to do. He was introduced to Pamela (nee Strickland) and the rest, as they say, is history.
Len Humphreys & Pamela Humphreys-Martin competed for 24 years winning all Western Australian titles plus Australasian and South Pacific titles in Exhibition dancing. They opened the Humphreys Dance Studio in Victoria Park in 1967 and in 1977 they undertook a period of full time study in England.
Len has proven to be one of Australia’s most outstanding Dancesport coaches and mentors having trained multiple champions at all levels including Juvenile, Junior, Youth, Amateur and Professional over many years.
A Life Member of Dance Masters International Association (DMIA) Len was previously an Examiner with DMIA. He now also trains many students for the theory section of Accreditation exams.
Len is considered to be one of Australia’s most experienced and well respected Adjudicators having judged all major National Championships over many years. Amongst his many International Adjudicating appointments, Len was appointed to judge the World Professional Ballroom Championship in Germany.
In 2003 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to dance and to the community.
